An almost Tardy Sunday Salon Feb 23 2014

Well this may be one of the most quickly tapped out Sunday Salons I've done in a while. Despite the fact that winter just wont ease its grip, I'm heading into spring cleaning... mostly because I want to move... again. Gypsy that I am apparently.

so here goes..

Time // 2:46
Eating // Popcorn! REAL popcorn... I quit doing microwave about a year or more ago.
Drinking // coffee... which i DID leave in the microwave actually...brb
Weather // bright and sunny and cold, not awful tho.. earlier this week there was a Severe Thunderstorm warning and a Blizzard warning here AT THE SAME TIME within a county of each other!! so weird! It's hard to get people to understand the difference between weather and climate and the changes all being linked.
READING // Wake ~ Anna Hope
I got a little further in this... but then one night I forgot to take my computer upstairs (I'm reading this on an epub) and so I picked up a book that's been on my nightstand forever and have sort of fallen under it's spell... who'd have thunk I'd actually really enjoy the telling of

The original Mary Shelley FRANKENSTEIN!!

READING // Notes from a Small Island - Bill Bryson
A section or 2. A page or 2. Bryson always fits and is always great!

LISTENING TO // The Mayor of Casterbridge ~ Thomas Hardy
I'm going to switch this to print and pick a different book for my audio selection this week... especially since this one is over due!!
Watching // I watched The Hobbit again...
hoping that giving it a second chance would make me change my mind about it... nope. I dislike it immensely.
And..

World War Z, which I actually really really liked!! One of the few times I gave up and saw the movie before I read the book. My friend and her son both read the book first and both liked the movie better... Your opinion???
OH except the part where .... (highlight to read.. I'm putting the font in white because it's spoilers)
When the 2 heros and 1 ineffectual zombie survive a plane crash and then they walk a wee little ways and viola! the EXACT place they were trying to get to. But that's what makes it a fun monster movie :)
Music // Still listening to mostly Life and KLOVE. Lovin' the KLOVE and Toby Mac!
Blogging // I ACTUALLY had a post in between Salons!! too bad it wasn't book related :/ oh well, it's a start
Acquisitions // I borrowed a couple Bible Study/Sunday School books... The Story ~ NIV. The Bible laid out chronologically and as one continuous story and the curriculum book to go with it by Randy Frazee. I LOVE this sort of study!
Hating  //  Not being as 'portable' as I was when I was 20 and my life fit in my Firebird!! Relocating is SOOOOO hard!!
Loving // My new work with the Walk to Emmaus community..A Christian retreat of spiritual growth and renewal.

Writing // feeling so A.D.D. with my pieces and not getting much done on anything
Avoiding // today... cleaning. I should be going gang busters on this house!! Especially vacuuming!
So that's an over view of where I am this week. 2 goals for next week.. I'm doing a Joyce Meyer 3030 challenge. Study the Bible, not just read, for 30 minutes a day for 30 days.
And write 500 words a day. An old high school classmate of mine wrote an AMAZING blogpost about a progress chain that I need to revisit... You can read that here...

Cupid Crunch... an addiction waiting to happen

You asked, I provide ....
Here is the recipe for Cupid Crunch. Once you make it the first time, you'll see how many ways you can modify it to fit any occasion event or dietary needs.

I found it Plain Chicken on Pintrest while looking for a new dish to bring to our works Valentine's snack party.

http://www.plainchicken.com/2012/02/cupid-crunch.html

Cupid Crunch

1 (24 oz) package vanilla Almond Bark

2 bags of lightly salted microwave popcorn, popped (approximately 16-20 cups popped popcorn)
1 1/2 cups Valentine candy corn
1 cup dry roasted, salted peanuts
1 1/2 cups M&Ms (Valentine colors)

Pop popcorn and place in a large bowl. The largest you have.  Pour peanuts, candy corn, and M&Ms on top.

Break up almond bark. Melt according to package directions. Pour over popcorn mixture. Stir until everything is well coated and then spread out onto waxed paper, parchment, or foil. Let sit until completely dry and then break up into clumps.

I couldn't find any pink candy corn so I opted to use craisins instead... GREAT substitute actually!! I used real popcorn and did it up in a 5 qt pan. This really does make TONS!! But I'm tellin ya.. of all the new recipes I've tried in the past 2 years, THIS is the one that really wowed everyone!

So there is my foray into the world of food porn :) Enjoy!!

Now back to regularly scheduled bookish stuff... :)

Sunday Salon Feb 16 2014

Time // 10:37
Eating // Cupid Crunch!! Instead of Valentine's Candy corn, I used craisins though. My co-worker Julie is pretty sure it's made with crack too.

Drinking // TEA!..... nah just kidding, it's just coffee
Weather // inch or so of snow yesterday, quiet and sunny but cold today, ice and snow tomorrow.. rinse & repeat
READING // I really didn't get ANY reading done! It seems I'm suffering from the proverbial book hangover and after being so immersed in Doctor Sleep, am having a hard time getting my mitts into anything else.
that and I realized that Odd Thomas comes out in theaters on the 28th and I loved that book so much and really really want to go back and re-read it before I go to the movie,.... but I cant FIND IT!!!! Having a lost book is a kin to not being able to find one of my cats... or a kid! (except the kids are off at college so Lord only knows WHERE they ever are!)
But I'm supposed to be reading....
Wake ~ Anna Hope
I keep reminding myself of how much I liked it when I started it a couple of weeks ago!
READING // Notes from a Small Island - Bill Bryson
Did a couple chapters in this and was thoroughly delighted!

LISTENING TO // The Mayor of Casterbridge ~ Thomas Hardy
I can't even bring myself to listen to anything right now.

Watching // TED talks.
Music // KLOVE
Blogging // At least I'm consistent with the Salon
Acquisitions // It was dollar days at Goodwill. And I managed to bring home 3 books... that's ironic because books are always either .50 or a dollar! :)
Oh and this is Marci (short for Marcutio). who apparently wanted his picture taken today. He's so weird! One of my herd.

Hating  //  The way people are so quick to write off another person. We were sitting in the local tavern having dinner and watching the Olympics when a group came in, not regulars, who wanted to know if we were seriously watching that crap. we said yes we were seriously watching that (replay of the USA vs Russia hockey game) and he was like but the RACE is on the other channel. Well, sorry we said, we are watching this right now. He proceeded to throw an adult version of a tantrum and called us everything and went back to his table with loud protests of our witchyness (never could pronounce my b's) and what a bunch of bs...he said he should just go get his gun and , quote, 'shoot em and then watch the race'. Nice. classy.
I felt so sad for his human condition that a difference of opinion meant justification to the ending of a life. I wish I'd have said it then, but I wish God's blessing on him and his friends and hope that God moves in him to soften his heart. I really do. How tragic.
Loving // Looking at opportunities.

Writing // Did some writing, but it sure didn't flow like I thought it would. So frustrated there.
Avoiding // Calling my step-mom. After my dad died, I just haven't had the energy to revisit all the grief. I hope she knows it's not that I don't care or think of her, it's just that I'm still processing mine and it takes all I have right now.
I'm getting excited for a few upcoming projects I'm involved in
April brings a retreat that I'm SUPER excited for!! And... during lent on Wednesday night we have a short worship service and then a dinner, and I'll be giving one of the sermons! It'll be my first as a Lay Servant.
May brings mother's day and our circle puts on the Mother/Daughter banquet and I have the program this year... Ladies of the Silver Screen... A Mother/Daughter banquet Hollywood Style :)
In the midst of all that, I want to read, and write, and hopefully see this weather turn to spring so I can get out and MOVE!

February 9 2013 Sunday Salon

Time // 9:44
Eating // P-bo toast
Drinking // Froshy ~ which is what I called coffee when I was 2 1/2
Weather // -8 this morning. really crappy snow yesterday. snowcoldsnowcoldsnowcold bleck.
READING // Wake ~ Anna Hope
I've just barely started this and so far am TOTALLY enamored with it. Plus this is one that I've fallen for because of the cover. I love it!
READING // Notes from a Small Island - Bill Bryson
A section or 2. A page or 2. Bryson always fits and is always great!

LISTENING TO // The Mayor of Casterbridge ~ Thomas Hardy
I was going to listen to this on the way to my meeting and Dance Marathon (70 miles away) but It was snowing and the roads were crap so I opted for silence.
Finished  // Doctor Sleep ~ Stephen King
Review coming. But oh my was this such classic KING!

Watching // TED talks.
Music // Still listening to mostly Life and KLOVE.
Blogging // At least I'm consistent with the Salon
Acquisitions // hmmmm. nothing this week. But I have an idea for TONS of acquisitions in my future.
Hating  //  I really do hate to hate... but this Winter! OY! Oh and feeling worthless at work and getting my feelings hurt. I'm not sure if they realize they are being hurtful or if they are trying to subtly tell me they think I'm being worthless ... either way. I was ready to get up and vamoose. permanently. Try talking in front of my back people. It's called adulthood. Try it.
Loving // Looking at opportunities.

Writing // Starting a short piece today.
Avoiding // confrontation at work. When they are out sick I don't go rearranging all their stuff because I don't like the way they have it. Why would they feel justified doing that to me? I know i"m harping but this really really hurt me this week.
On a positive note that makes me feel like that place I have to go for a paycheck is so petty.....

These kids (and it is a totally student run philanthropy organization) spent from 7 p.m. Friday night until 7 p.m. Saturday night on their feet dancing.
No sleep
No sitting
No caffeine products
And they raised:

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
I'm so proud of my girls for being so emotionally vested in such a dedicated organization that TRULY makes a difference in the lives of people whose kids are battling cancer.
Kudos to you my girls. I love you so!

SUPER Sunday Salon!!

Heeeeeere we go fans and temporary fans... it's Super Bowl Sunday!

Yah, I don't pull that off very well do I? I actually don't really care and find it a tad annoying and over the top in gratuitous waste. But then I'm sure something I do is too.

So, to combat this madness... I'm watching every Eco TED talk I can find!!
Like this one...

http://www.ted.com/talks/zimchallenge.html

Anyway.... on to the Salon...

Time // 3:12 p.m.
Eating // PBJ
Drinking // Coffee. Some things are just too good to change
Weather // because I just don't have enough people to complain to about the weather, I thought I'd put it too here... actually it's so I can see that winter will end. But not this week. Possibility of large snow this week. And cold. but not as cold.
READING // Doctor Sleep ~ Stephen King
I didn't mean to read this... I mean yes I meant to read it, it was a Christmas gift from my girls! And something I asked for, but I didn't mean to read it YET! It has me though.  King. Goes without saying.
READING // Wake ~ Anna Hope
This is a galley I requested off of goodreads and this is what I'm supposed to be reading and what I WANT to be reading. King. Dang him.
READING // Notes from a Small Island - Bill Bryson
I don't know what I'll do when I finish this and I don't have a daily (or there abouts) dose of Bryson-isms. :) I love reading this at a leisurely pace.

LISTENING TO // The Mayor of Casterbridge ~ Thomas Hardy
Not getting very far on this, but I have to take a little drive next weekend so, if the weather cooperates, I'll get to listen to a bigger chunk then.
Finished  // A Wrinkle in Time ~ Madeleine L'Engle

Watching // TED talks.
Music // Lots of Christian music this week.
Blogging // So... Whaddya think??? Does this make me look fat??
Acquisitions // Nothing this week which isn't always a bad thing!!
Hating  //  Still .....W.I.N.T.E.R. still.. why won't it STOP!
Loving // More good decisions and seeing my girls doing well this season!!

Writing // Not anything too productive. That really really must change!!
Avoiding // Bills. I am working on continuing to organize my office.
Phillip Seymore Hoffman died. It's suspected that his ongoing battle with addiction took him. Why. :(
Big Big stuff coming up for next weekend for me. University of Iowa Dance Marathon, a student philanthropy organization, holds it's Big Event starting next Friday. Not only did this group help us so much when my daughter was sick, but they provide so many millions of dollars of help to ALL the families out there who have heard the heart-breaking news that their child has cancer. Last year it was 1.4 million they raised. My daughter is in remission and is a student now at University of Iowa. She was  a dancer last year and this year she is in a leadership position for Dance Marathon. It is such a success story... one I'm pretty DARN happy is OUR story!!
If you're so inclined... here is a donation link... or look to your local University. I bet they have one too and ALL the kids need the services Dance Marathon and Children's Miracle Network provide.
https://osl.iowa.uiowa.edu/dancemarathon/donate/5/7159

They need this help. After all, I know. And some of my friends know too, but their stories didn't end as easily.

Sunday Salon ~ The Pregame

I am so not digging this blog look, so I'll be right back...

in the meantime... here's a fun bit of ShabbyRabbit trivia:
I'm a Broncos fan. Have been since I was a kid. I chose them because they have a horsey on their helmets. :)

Whatever it takes.
